Mark your calendars for 20th to 23rd July 2017 this year, to catch the Pesta Raya 2017, a Malay Festival of Arts. This event which runs from Thursday to Sunday is held in celebration of ties with artists and the festive Aidilfitri period.
Pesta Raya 2017, showcases the best of Nusantara – a geopolitical and historical term to define the South East Asian archipelago – so it include Malaysian’s Queen of Rock Ella, a re-staging of the play Main2 as well as cultural performances from Indonesia, an indie-alternative music group Payung Teduh, the gamelan play Setan Jawa, dikir barat workshops for the whole family and many more.
Festival Commission: Setan Jawa
Commissioned by Esplanade, Arts Centre Melbourne and Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Setan Jawa is a collaboration across cultures that brings together a 20-piece Indonesian ensemble and a Western orchestra to perform live to a new black-and-white silent film by celebrated Indonesian filmmaker, Garin Nugroho. The film of the same name – Setan Jawa – tells the story of a young man and the sacrifices he makes to save his lover, including a deal with the devil. The soundtrack for the film has been jointly written by award-winning Australia
composer/conductor Iain Grandage and renowned Indonesian composer Rahayu Supanggah. Rahayu Supanggah previously scored Robert Wilson’s I La Galigo which premiered at Esplanade in 2004.
For Pesta Raya, music for the film will be performed live by Indonesia’s Gamelan Garasi Seni Benawa and Singapore’s Metropolitan Festival Orchestra. The world premiere of Setan Jawa took place earlier in 2017 on the opening night of the Asia-Pacific Triennial of Performing Arts at the Melbourne Art Centre, Melbourne, Australia, and will be performed at the Holland Festival Internationaal Podiumkunsten Amsterdam in June before Pesta Raya at Esplanade in July.
